Crime  Watch

BE THE FIRST ON YOUR BLOCK!

This is  your chance to be pro-active!  Don't let the crooks ruin your day, sign up now to become one of the first people to be aware of scams and other malicious activity in and around our neighborhood.  The best defense against the bad guys is information.  That information is available to you from the Richardson Police Department by click here to receive weekly crime stats for our neighborhood via email.

For those of you who would like to receive additional information from the Richardson Police Department regarding crime trends, unusual happenings, scams, etc., please send an e-mail to DonnaShepherd@uenha.org.  I will then forward information to you as I receive it from the police department.  Information received in the past include an incident involving “gypsies” in our fair city and a scam involving Wal-Mart.  These reports are not disseminated on a regular basis, simply as they occur.
Also, please remember that if anything unusual or suspicious occurs, your police department is there to serve you if you simply call them.  The regular police phone number is 972-744-4800.  I have called more than once asking that an officer check a solicitor to be sure the solicitor has a solicitor’s permit.  I have also called when I observed petty vandalism in progress.  The officers have always been prompt and courteous.
If all else fails, call 911 and tell the dispatch operator that you do not really have an emergency, you just can’t find the main phone number.  You might be put on hold while the operator deals with a real emergency, but you will eventually get the help you need.
Information is the best weapon we have against crime.  If you don’t report the information you have, we all lose.

Do yourself and your neighbors a favor – spread the news when a burglary or attempted burglary occurs.  Many times there is a trend and simply being aware of the technique being used by the bad guys can help keep you from being their next victim.

03June2010 - Exploding Bottles

Richardson Police warn of exploding bottles.
That plastic bottle found in your yard may have been put there as a dangerous prank.
The miscreants are mixing aluminum foil and liquid Drano.  If those two components are combined and then shaken, the reaction causes the bottle to swell and explode.  The components are placed in a bottle then set in a yard.  When a person picks up the bottle, thinking it's trash, the mixing starts as you walk around with it and within 20-30 seconds the explosion occurs.
A recent news story and video that explains the danger.

12May2010 - Know Your Stuff

The City of Richardson Police Department recovered over 21,000 stolen items in 2009.  Of those, only 6,415 were identified by property owners.  Creating a property inventory of your personal valuables can increase chances of a return of the property.  “Know Your Stuff”, located at www.knowyourstuff.org is an online property inventory software which allows you to store information about your personal belongings including serial numbers, descriptions and pictures.  Inventorying your property increases the chances of it being returned in the case of burglary.  RPD volunteers can aid any Richardson resident with the “Know Your Stuff” process.  Appointments can be made at 972-744-4955.  More

03February2010 - East Richardson Burglaries Update

Sent to: East-side Neighborhood Crime Watch areas

Our Patrol Officers would like me to pass on some information to hopefully raise awareness regarding recent burglaries.
We were very fortunate to have seen a sharp decrease in the number of home burglaries in December on the east side of Richardson.  Unfortunately that number has risen to approximately 15 for the month of January 2010.  A lot of the activity is taking place in the Duck Creek and Yale Park neighborhoods (area bounded by Campbell Rd south to Belt Line Rd.., and Plano Rd. east to Jupiter Rd.).
The common method being used by these burglars is as follows:
A persistent loud knock, it could almost be more accurately described as a banging at the door, that will last for a minute or two.  Most legitimate solicitors will knock a couple of times, and leave after about 30 seconds to a minute if nobody answers.  The burglars are knocking or pounding hard enough to make sure if someone is home, they will definitely respond to the front door.  The burglars want to be sure nobody is home and this is how they find out.  After getting no response to the knocking, they will then either return to a car and drive around back or walk around to the back and find a window or glass patio door to break, then make entry to commit the crime.  Always answer the front door, keep it closed and speak through the door, telling them you are not interested.
Owens Park area offense:
In the most recent case, on 02/02/10 at 8:45pm (1700 blk of Woodcreek), the homeowner arrived home to find three individuals had broken in through a back window and were removing property.  The homeowner held one subject at gunpoint and the other two ran.  Officers responded and all three subjects were arrested.  This case does not appear to be random at this time.  These burglars arrived to the location on foot and no car was being used, they jumped over the back fence and used a rock to break the glass window.

Please be extra alert for any suspicious persons in your neighborhood.  Subjects walking in the alley, cutting between houses, jumping fences, loitering on the street.  If you see someone knocking at your neighbors house, keep watching to see where they go, if your neighbor answers or not.  Call in anyone who look suspicious..

Civilian Volunteers for the Richardson Police Department (RPD)  Volunteers are assisting the Police Dept in a variety of ways.  A new program started in March will enlist the help of volunteers to perform vacation house checks.  Call load has been increasing, and this program will free up officers for other more pressing duties that only an officer can perform, while increasing the delivery of a service that many residents utilize.  All will be trained by the RPD and criminal background checks performed.   Questions can be made to RPD's new Volunteer Coordinator Officer Chris Gescheidle at (972-744-4953 or chris.gescheidle@cor.gov
